Sit With It for a While
curated by Harrison Brooks
5&J Gallery, Lubbock, TX
OPENING: Friday, August 7, 2026
Sit With It for a while is a planned exhibition of sculptural chairs that exist in the space between function and art. Each piece is built to be used — to be sat in — but may simultaneously disrupt comfort, convention, or expectation. This show aims to challenge how we understand utility in objects, questioning the boundaries between art, craft, and design. Can a chair still be a chair if it unnerves you? Can sculpture still serve if it’s built to carry weight — both physically and metaphorically?
The chair is perhaps the most intimate piece of furniture — it holds our bodies, shapes our posture, affects how we feel. In Sit With It, some works emphasize precision and traditional practices; others embrace imbalance, asymmetry, or unfinished states. A seat can represent comfort, power, waiting, absence, conversation, labor, ceremony, protest, intimacy, memory, or rest. We are seeking sculptural works that challenge, reinterpret, or celebrate the idea of “having a seat” in all its literal and conceptual forms.
