STATEMENT

I picked up a book as big as a pack of matches entitled “Virgo”.
To think, I had been searching all this time for who I am, and here it is in the palm of my hand. If you plug in ‘Ryder’ for the word ‘Virgo’, this is me:

Ryder is the embodiment of purity, devotion, and service (so, true)…
Ryder’s essential nature is to enrich mankind selflessly
(Oh, yes, never a thought for myself.) blah blah… power to communicate… blah
Ryder is linked with change and transformation, while the element of
Earth links Ryder firmly in reality. (
Practical transformation.)
The world is a huge machine to be observed and analyzed so that its operation can be perfected… Ryder is in a constant battle between order and chaos.

The work I do is about transformation. It is about the things we see and, of course, the things we no longer see or question. It is about being given half the story and about finding the best answers hidden behind the façade. It is about how we expected the world to behave. It is about how looking at our past and rethinking our assumptions.

In the 2008 BRAVADO series I am questioning iconic American stereotypes as beautiful activators of how we grow up. I grew up in New Mexico and now live in West Texas. These figures played a key role in my development. I now question their validity as role models given their flawed natures, but I love them none-the-less.
