Life or Something Like It

LAUREN BOLDON & NATHAN HANSEN

Opening Reception: 6-9 PM Friday, May 2nd, 2008

The ART DEPOT presents "Life or Something Like It." The exhibition will feature work by artists Lauren Boldon and Nathan Hansen.  The exhibition features sculpture, kinetic art pieces, and prints. Boldon is the recipient of a Kimborough Grant through the Dallas Museum of Art. Hansen is an accomplished sculptor working with wood and metal. The show promises ingenuity and ambiguity, questions and the pretext of resolution. Join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 1st, 2008. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

The statement below has been created by Boldon as a means to consider her recent body of work:

“Sometimes I feel like the two halves of my brain need to move on and find new roommates. There is the right lobe that fantasizes about the house I will own and food I will eat and hours of leisure exercise on one of those stationary elliptical machines in front of a personal size television. The left half ridicules the first one saying in a Buddhist like chant, “Vanity and such leads to unfulfilled endless pursuits,” and “Who cares about the Jones’s anyway? You don’t even know anyone by that name.” I am not unique here, speaking strictly from the perspective of a human being. Although, if you were to hear such an inner dialog of say a chicken you might hear things like, gobble gobble and cluck cluck, and no such inner dialogs of any moral dilemmas, other than the occasional chicken curse at the neighboring bird who will not get off it and move over a little bit or even find it’s own cage for once. Of course, it is hard to get very complex inside the chicken brain, which incidentally has eleven whole units dedicate to the Rhombomeres area, which controls very mundane activities such as breathing. Sometimes, my right lobe fantasizes about inserting eleven or so whole units in the corpus callosum, a sort of nerve highway between the right and left cerebrum, in order to form a barricade between the warring factions which stubbornly refuse to put in their notice and take up more gobbling and clucking.”
