Catch and Release

My father was a part time preacher, worked fishing on a shrimp boat  and has been married three times to very unusual women.  I’ve considered him a blessing and at times, a curse.   His biases, stories and habits are deeply embedded in me.   It’s impossible to shake them; they are part of my cellular memory.

Whenever contemplating artistic influences and those issues that inspire new works or practices, there are always favorite great masters, symbols from other cultures, colors and techniques.  Many considerations weave their way into an artwork, some vital to its outcome and others just add flair.  All are tossed into the mix and spun around in an effort to find the core of a visual thought.  In spite of all that, what has fascinated me the most through the years is that no matter how contemporary I think I sit in this net of my influences, part of my father always emerges.

For this exhibition, Ken Dixon and Robin Germany and I considered each other’s network of symbols and imagery, those visual pieces of information that cross- inform our works.   We discussed the many notions of “catch and release” as they might fit into each of our lives.  It’s been a great pleasure to work together, especially because each of us considers this a show that has given us the chance to experiment with new ideas.   As a result, we have learned something about ourselves and the works have become a distillation of what we caught and released to you, the viewer.
