Flight Plans :: new work by Ryder Richards

Friday, Sep 7th, 2007 - 6:00-9:00 PM
Art Depot Annex - 1703 Texas Avenue

Michelangelo and Bernini made sculpture worthy of homage… I have a photo reproduction of a static sculpture, hundreds of years old, burdened with the weight of significance, of religion… Flight is necessary for release… and perhaps an image is worth everything if you make it your own…

To liberate these old masters works from the context of history a transformation is necessary. You must give them a new plan, a new destination: a Flight Plan, if you will. Render them into 2-dimensions; let them lose some of that bulky 3-D meaning. Fold that rendering into a new sculpture with the possibility of flight: A paper plane. We now have a portable sculpture ready to surpass its past, that is, to transcend. Unfortunately, that drawn on paper plane is still imbued with meaning and that meaning is weight. The plane must fall due to the weight of it’s past. Transcendence is once again impossible.

However, the hope has been planted and the plane drawings are determined to attain transcendence. A dogfight of classic works from two masters ensues.

Flight Plans provides photographic images of the battle and interpretive paintings of the struggle to tell the story of the heroic death of the M-DaV Bomber (a.k.a. Michelangelo’s “David”), the only casualty thus far in the rebellion.
